Mrs Grace, a pensioner, residing at sixty-four School Road, had gone into her kitchen to make a pot of tea in readiness for the nine o’clock news. While Mrs Grace waited for the kettle to boil, she was distracted by a strange commotion from outside. She peered through the Venetian blinds hanging from her kitchen window and saw what looked like a boy shooting lightning from his hands into the sky. Heaven help her. The sky was a roasting inferno, and even with her hearing aid turned down, she could hear a horrible high-pitched squealing.

Mrs Grace shut the blinds again and shuffled across to her medicine drawer. Pulling it open, she revealed more pots of pills than on the shelves of Ashgate Pharmacy. Mrs Grace shook her head. It wasn’t much fun getting old. The mind played tricks on you. She fumbled a selection of pots open and duly knocked back a good handful.

‘That tea ready yet, Audrey? It’s starting,’ called her husband.

‘Nearly, dear.’ Mrs Grace busied herself with making the tea and thought nothing more about what she’d seen outside the window. She’d learned to ignore the strange workings of a senile mind.
